From an early age, founder Maya instilled in each member a deep respect for materials, balanced with a lawless sense of play. This philosophy is firmly implanted in every collection they produce. Maya Romanoff has spent the last 50 years pioneering and redefining wallcoverings – creating cutting-edge designs with paint, glass beads, gold leaf, seashells, wood and stitching in our Chicago studio. Today, it is the largest manufacturer of handmade wallcoverings in the United States.
At Maya Romanoff’s studio, they create handmade wallcovering materials in an age of technology. Their modern factory is inspired by 18th century workshops, with long painting tables, stencils, drying racks and paper rolls. The beauty of the wallcoverings comes from the materials themselves and the craftsmen whose hands meticulously touch the surface. Romanoff Studio rarely uses machinery; instead, it relies on the skills of its craftsmen and paints, dyes and fabrics.
