Founder and CEO, Bernie de Le Cuona

de Le Cuona is rooted in nature. Founder and visionary, Bernie de Le Cuona grew up in rural South Africa and the natural world has always been at the heart of what she does. Bernie is, not only a textiles expert but a sustainability trailblazer from the fabrics she creates to the ethos of her company. She was the first to launch GOTS-certified 100% organic linen collections and bed linen – the ultimate sustainable luxury for interiors.

“A love of linen and attention to detail first fired my desire to create beautiful fabrics.” — Bernie de Le Cuona

A lifetime love affair with linen

While travelling in Belgium, Bernie was introduced to linen and the beauty of the robust yet gentle textile. The versatility of this ancient, inherently sustainable natural fabric captivated her. The flax fields of northern France and Belgium mesmerised her, as did the age-old craft of transforming the stems of the flax plant into cloth. It is here that the best flax in the world is grown and processed into fibres for spinning and weaving.

Ancient craftsmanship and artisanal techniques

The next stop was India. Here, Bernie was inspired by the way Indian craftsmen produce silk and how all the weaving and finishing was done by hand. The attention to detail was incredible! She was immediately resolved to apply the same washing and softening techniques to linen, something she had not seen on her travels in Belgium.

Established 1992

With all the knowledge and inspiration from these trips, Bernie established de Le Cuona with a vision to make linen fabrics that the world had never seen before – wonderfully floppy soft and textured. These textures, complemented by the distinctive colour palette of her beloved Africa, make de Le Cuona’s collections truly unique.

More than fabrics

The de Le Cuona range of unique accessories complements the fabric collections. Textures are layered, colours combined, and indicate detailing applied to create cushions and throws that are distinctively de Le Cuona. Beauty, quality, and craftsmanship are also the cornerstones of the Bespoke Interior Tailoring and Revitalise service which includes made-to-measure curtains, cushions, throws, bedspreads, and upholstery. Everything is expertly made in the UK by in-house specialists.
